Chasing the Olympic Dream, Rio 2016

My name is Ricardo Estremera and I compete in the 3,000m steeplechase for the Puerto Rican National Track & Field team. My goal this year is to make it to the Olympic games in Rio. While most professional athletes are able to train full time as their profession, I am also working on obtaining my PhD. The combination of training full time while working towards a doctorate degree and having a job has been extremely challenging. Yet despite it all, I still have been able to run 8:37 in my event, 7 seconds shy of the 8:30 Olympic standard. 
I have paid for the majority of the competitions and all that they entail (airfare, hotel, transportation, food, entry fees etc.) with my own savings. Because of this, I have only been able to compete in a select number of competitions. I do not believe that hitting the Olympic standard should be based on ones financial situation, but rather their talent. Therefore, I am asking for your support to help me go to Europe and continue competing so that I may receive more opportunities to hit the Olympic standard. This money will help pay for my airfare, a place to stay, entry fees, food and transportation.

Mi nombre es Ricardo Estremera, actualmente compito en los 3,000m con obstáculos para el equipo nacional de Puerto Rico. Mi meta este año es representar a mi país en los Juegos Olímpicos en Rio. Mientras muchos de los atletas profesionales pueden practicar a tiempo completo, yo hago mi doctorado. Combinar el entrenamiento a tiempo completo, trabajar en la tesis doctoral y tener un trabajo ha sido desafiante. A pesar de las dificultades, he podido correr 8:37 en mi evento, a solo 7 segundos de la marca mínima(8:30) para las Olimpiadas. He costeado la mayoría de las competencia y lo que vincula (boletos de avión, hotel, transportación, comida, ingreso a las competencias, etc.) con mis ahorros. Razón por la cuál solo he competido en un número limitado de competencias de alto nivel competitivo. No estoy de acuerdo en que lograr la marca para las Olimpiadas deban estar ligadas a la situación económica de uno, sino el talento de la persona. Por consiguiente les pido su ayuda y apoyo para ir a Europa, para continuar mi trayectoria competitiva y aumentar mis posibilidades de hacer la marca olímpica. Este dinero ayudaría a sufragar el boleto de viaje, hoteles, transportación, comida e ingreso a las competencia.
