I’M NOT CRAZY – I’M RIDING FOR A CAUSE!

A few years ago I discovered The Tour Divide, a mountain bike race held annually. Endurance athletes from all over the globe converge on the town of Banff Alberta Canada in the second week of June for the start of this race. The race traverses the Canadian, then US Rockies terminating at the Mexican border in southern New Mexico.

It’s a grueling, brutal, yet beautiful 2,745 mile journey that follows and crosses the Continental Divide many times. I knew I had to do it.

I needed YEARS to be physically, mentally and financially prepared for something of this magnitude. There are so many details it can be overwhelming at times. From staying motivated on cold windy, rainy days in the saddle, pain in my knees and feet, being tired from overtraining, sacrificing time away from my family, training seems never ending.

Since the beginning of 2016 I will have put in over 3000 miles on the bike, spent numerous hours weight training and doing yoga. I’ve bought, tested, and compared numerous articles of clothing, shoes and equipment. I read books on past racers experiences, encountering bears in the mountains, bike maintenance, training, and survival.

I’ve saved up money and vacation time, acquired maps and studied the whole route, watched weather patterns and read many blogs, corresponded with various veterans, and kept up with forums. Each and every piece of clothing, spare parts and bike equipment has a specific purpose. Every minute of training has a specific purpose. No time is wasted.

The object is to travel as fast, light and efficient as possible, though one usually packs his fears too.

MY SUPPORT STRUCTURE

To Andy and Jonas at Landry’s bike shop, my friends and certainly my family and spouse Lynn, thank you for your sacrifices, encouragement and support. I promise I will give it my all. Yes, this has been and will continue to be a spiritual journey for me.

YOUR OPPURTUNITY TO BE INCLUDED AND HELP ME!

I am riding to raise awareness for the Framingham Street Ministries, a charity I’ve been a part of for years. I’m giving you the opportunity to sponsor my ride by the mileage I complete. Knowing that I’m riding to raise money for others in need will highly motivate me to press onward when the going gets tough…and IT WILL!!

During the race, I will be wearing a tracking device and can be followed online at Trackleaders.com  Click on "Tour Divide 2016".

ABOUT THE MINISTRY

Framingham Street Ministries is a local non-profit 501(c)(3) Christian charity, based in Framingham Massachusetts. The Federal Tax ID # is [phone redacted].

Formed by Reverend Jim Bachmann years ago. Jim had a rough former life that saw him living on the dark side, in jail and on the streets. Jim was fortunate to have met a man that led him to the Lord. Jim made a decision to change his course, and ended up putting himself thru seminary school. He started Framingham Street Ministries 8 years ago as an answer to his question to God…”What would you like me to do for you?” Gods answer, “Give back to the community with the knowledge that I have given you, go into the streets and spread the Good News”.

One Saturday a month a prayer walk is done thru the streets. Two Saturdays a month at the Salvation Army in downtown Framingham, food, clothing, bibles and Hope are given out to the homeless, and anyone else who has a need.
