The Semaphore and Port Adelaide RSL sub branch is proud to choose Operation K9 as its fundraising campaign for 2016
What is Operation K9?
Operation K9 is a relatively new program founded in 2013 through RSL South Australia and Royal Society for the Blind (RSB) providing accredited PTSD Assistance dogs to our Returned Servicemen and Women. OPK9 Assistance Dogs can help in supporting independence and social interaction, as well as being trained to respond to vital signals from their Veteran in times of distress, including nightmares and panic attacks. OPK9 Assistance dogs are trained through the Royal Society for the Blind, at a cost of between $25,000 - $30,000 each and takes 2 years to graduate from the program. The RSL then supports the dog and Veteran for the life of their partnership, including all costs associated with food, veterinary services and regular training updates. The average working life is about 9 years, but retirement of Assistance dogs is assessed on a case by case basis.
We want to get Operation K9 out there and raise much needed funds and hand in hand ( or should we say hand in paw) with that much needed awareness for this fantastic program, helping to give back and say thanks to those who have given and are still giving for their country. Just because they’ve taken off the cams and combat boots doesn’t mean the battle is over.
