Hi.  My name is Gina and I have an AMAZING 16 year old son named Dominic.  As most of you know, but for those who don’t, Dominic is Autistic.  He also has other disabilities as well.  Las year things got really difficult for Dominic and after all of my efforts to keep him home, a decision was made that it was time to look into a residential school placement.  Mostly for Dominic’s safety.  Dominic tries to escape when he feels trapped, as many children on the spectrum do.  Which in this case of Dominic fleeing, it raises many safety issues.

We found placement for Dominic in August.  Unfortunately it turned out to be the wrong placement for him. Dominic began to unravel. He started to run away from his placement, which was in Lake Placid, NY.  The last time he ran was at the end of Winter.  He was barefoot and in the snow exposed for 11 hours.  He suffered 3rd degree frostbite on both of his feet along with hypothermia. He was transported to the hospital and they immediately began working on his feet.  He was then transported to a hospital in Plattsburgh, and this is where he remains currently.

Dominic has been in the Plattsburgh hospital for 79 days.  He is lucky to be alive.  His feet, by miracle, have healed.  He will have some permanent damage, but his feet did not have to be amputated.  The hospital he is currently in really is amazing and they care so much for Dominic.  Fantastic staff of Nurses, Doctors and Social Workers.

Dominic is well enough to leave the hospital, however, right now there is no placement for him.  The hospital is helping us look for a safer and a more appropriate placement for him.  Teamed up with the school district, myself and some other agencies we are diligently applying for programs.  And this is where we need help from our community.

Thus far we have been unsuccessful having him placed.  Our insurance has not been so great.  They have stopped paying for his hospital stay about 40 days ago and his secondary Medicaid stopped paying, as well.  We have appealed both insurance companies but have been denied.  Needless to say the medical bills are piling up and daily we have being charged a large amount.  The bills are expected to be paid out of pocket.

My son is 3 ½ hours away.  I travel every weekend to see him.  It’s costly and we are starting to really feel the strain of the costs after almost three months of this.  I wish there was an end in sight and a new placement near, but so far there is not.  Dom could spend the summer in the hospital, sadly.  With encouragement from some staff at the hospital and some of my close friends and family, I have agreed to reach out to our community and ask for some financial help.

Anything is appreciated, no matter the amount, even if you don’t donate a penny. Please share this with your friends.

We Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  Thank for taking the time to read Dominic’s story.    Thank you far and near for your support, and your love.  THANK YOU.
