Peterson Family Help Fund

On August 29th 2015 the Peterson family was on vacation in Blaine Washington. While there,  the power went out from a storm that came through the area. DeAnne's father, step-mother and sister decided to drive to the nearby town to see if anyone had power so they could find some food. After discovery that the nearby locations did not have power either, Justin decided that he would go up into Canada and check there, since they were so close to the border.

As sometimes happens at the border, Justin was questioned by the Canadian Border Patrol. They asked routine questions about his trip and why he was coming into Canada.  Justin explained he was coming to get food for his family. When they asked him if he had any firearms in the car he said no. Justin - who is a police officer - thought that he had left his gun back at the condo in his backpack. After some more questioning they discovered he was a police officer in the states and they asked him to pull his car over. They searched the car while he was inside the building and they ended up finding his handgun in the center console.

Justin honestly forgot that he had put his weapon in the center console, however that didn't matter to the Border Patrol. They proceeded to arrest him for illegal trafficking of a weapon into Canada and lying to an officer.

Clearly embarassed by the incident, Justin was released, but only after he paid a fee of $500.00 Canadian. In addition he was charged with another $1,000 .00 Canadian to get his car out of the parking lot.

Due to an active investigation and pending litigation, Justin was initially placed on paid administrative duty, however, most recently Justin was moved to upaid administrative leave until the charges were settled.

Because of this, Justin has been out of work, leaving a huge financial burden on the Peterson family. This along with mounting legal fees has amounted to a financial strain that would test even the most hardy of families. In addition to the $7,000.00 already spent, the Petersons are looking at another $10,000.00 in legal fees.

Justin is one of the most humble and soft spoken guys I have ever met. There is nothing in his demeanor that would mark him as the criminal he is being made out to be. This is a case of a simple mistake being blown out of proportion. He would like nothing more than to clear this up and go back to work serving the citizens of his city in his capacity of an officer of the law.

If you know the Peterson's, you know they are not ones to ask for help. That is why I am asking for them. If you can help the Peterson's out, even with just $5, I know they would be so appreciative.
