Liza's New Liver - Chapter 3
Donation protected
On December 15th our daughter, Liza , was the recipient of a liver donated by her older sister, Jen. Initially both girls did extremely well and were well along in their recovery. After only six days Jen was released from the hospital and it was looking as if Liza would be heading home for New Year's weekend. As it happened, on December 29th Liza went into sceptic shock caused by a staph infection and ended up in the ICU for four days. Once she recovered from the infection she returned to the transplant floor where she began her recovery process again. Sadly, however, the new liver which Liza and Jen had named "Winnie" (short for Winner) just didn't seem strong enough to do the job it needed to do, and by January 20th Liza landed back in the ICU where she still remains today. At this time it has been determined that there is no alternative for Liza except to get a new liver and do a re-transplant. All of this is a prelude to saying that in spite of all the planning and contingencies that had been put in place to carry Liza and her family through the three month recovery period none of those plans considered the extraordinarily long hospital stay with all the attendant expenses as well as what will be needed once Liza returns home.
