For over 10 years Dave Umstead has been inspiring students at Hollis Brookline High School to not only love music, but embrace every aspect of it. He isn't just a band director, he is a mentor, a leader, and a friend. Day in and day out, Mr. Umstead sacrifices his time, energy, and money without a want for gratitude, most days going above and beyond his job description. Every year, the graduating senior class shows their appreciation through a gift called the "Dave Umstead Award." This year, the seniors of Hollis Brookline High School Class of 2016 would like to thank Mr. Umstead by giving him the money to purchase a new trumpet. After all he has done for his students, teaching us to love what we do in and out of the band room, as well as to be better human beings, we would like to give back to him. We would like to do this by connecting him to music, as he has done for us. We are looking to raise roughly $3,500 towards a gift certificate he can use to purchase the new trumpet he has always wanted. We are looking to raise this in the next few weeks. We would be very grateful if we could raise this money and give back to Mr. Umstead because he has shaped so many of our lives and fostered a love for music and a love for exploration, commitment, and hard work.

Just received the following update from Trent Austin of Austin Custom Brass: "Dave came in (visit #1 of 2) and picked up this cool Adams Flugelhorn thanks to the campaign. He's not complete and will come back in a few weeks to pick up a trumpet as well." Thank you all for your generosity and support!

Hi Everyone! Thank you again for all of your support. I'd like to pass on the following message from Mr. Umstead himself: "Thanking someone for holding a door is easy. Showing appreciation to a friend who buys lunch is not overly difficult. Knowing what to say when a group of wonderful people gives you a gift of unimaginable proportions is another matter entirely. My ability to adequately express my gratitude is going to fall drastically short. My students, past and present, have already bountifully rewarded me by allowing me into their lives. I require and deserve nothing more, yet the dividends accumulate. I will remain forever proud of the many musical accomplishments we’ve shared, but having the opportunity and privilege to know and enjoy the company of the HB musicians is what I appreciate the most. Time and time again, the Hollis-Brookline community has shown itself to be extraordinary. Are people in this geographic area, actually smarter, more talented and better looking than average? Yes, I think they are! However, the general decency and generosity that exists is what really makes it a special place. I am eternally thankful for the physical gift (which I plan to pick out this summer), but that is actually the smaller part of what you have given me. You have extended a magnificent gesture of appreciation which has changed me for the better. It is with a strengthened sense of faith in the human spirit that I promise to “pay it forward” with the hope of perpetuating the positive energy that you have generated."

Hi Everyone! Thanks to all of you, we have surpassed not only our first goal, but our second one as well! Mr. Umstead will now have the remainder to spend on accessories for his new trumpet. In order to streamline the withdrawal process, we have decided to keep the Go Fund Me open through the weekend and give Mr. Umstead beneficiary status after Jazz Night on Thursday. This means that there is still time to donate if you wish to. Thank you all for your support. I know I speak on behalf of my fellow seniors when I say that we are incredibly grateful to have such a supportive community. We can't thank everyone enough for allowing us the ability to honor and thank a man who has shaped our lives.

Hi everyone! To all who have donated, thank you for your generous donations. In order to cover the Go Fund Me withdrawal fee we have decided to raise the goal of this page. Please help us reach this goal by the time we withdrawal tomorrow night and as always please share this page so we can give Mr. Umstead the "thank you" he deserves! Thank you again for all of your support!

Nick, you’re an even better person than you are a musician...and that’s saying something. Dave, ditto.
