Beyond Words: Youth Arts Event

Arts Programming for Immigrant and Refugee Youth

A NEED FOR CONNECTION
When arriving in a new country, it can be difficult to learn a new language, make friends and relate with your new community. Drumming, theatre and dance are powerful ways to express oneself and build relationships before the mastery of English.

The Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM)’s youth programming offers educational, recreational and social supports within a safe, fun and inclusive setting as newcomer youth overcome barriers and reach for their potential.

Maximized capacity and funding has left arts programming on a back-burner, despite regular requests from youth.

A NEW EVENT
Participants from Leadership Winnipeg have teamed up with IRCOM and its sister organizations to create opportunities for integration, inclusiveness and community through the arts.

On May 16th, immigrant and refugee youth will participate in drumming, theatre and dance workshops lead by key local talent. Kids will be able to connect with community mentors as well as their peers within the rich context of Winnipeg’s history, culture and arts scene.

The event is free for the youth, and we are using the opportunity to raise awareness and establish a core fund for arts programming initiatives.
