It's Your World Cleanup/Art Project

*All donations will be matched up to $1000 thanks to the Paso del Norte Foundation! Thanks to them and to you for helping us!

My name is Candace Printz and I teach art at El Dorado High School in Socorro Independent School District. I recently entered a Get Going Day contest for teachers through Barnes & Noble and won!  I’d like to tell you about my project and invite you for an exciting opportunity to contribute to our cause.

Chelsea Clinton wrote a book, “It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going!” that focuses on positive impacts within your community. In the spirit of this book, teachers were encouraged through a contest with Barnes & Noble to submit project ideas to improve their community. I proposed that our students adopt a section of the desert to clean up. We would then wash, sort, and count all the items we collect and create artwork out of it. We would also like to invite volunteers from local non-profits to assist with this cleanup project. Local artists, familiar with working with recycled art, and environmental services individuals would give students workshops along the way to further their education on artistic techniques and safety information about the environment. After all artwork has been created, it will be a part of a traveling exhibit that will be hosted by El Paso, Las Cruces & Juarez to better inform our region about the importance of recycling. All artwork will be for sale. Any proceeds that we receive from the sale of this artwork will go back to the local non-profits (the Humane Society, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and CDEC) that assisted us with the cleanup and creation of these works.

This is an exciting project that will make a huge, positive impact on our local community. We do, however, need support to make this year-long event possible. We need help with art supplies, sunscreen, cleaning supplies, water, food, workshop presenters, travel costs, power tools, safety items, catering, printing fees, storage units, and gallery spaces.

This project will impact students, parents, community members, local artists, local non-profits, partners in education, the land that we clean up, and the El Paso/New Mexico/Mexico region as a whole. Any donations you can provide would be greatly appreciated. We would be so grateful if you could help us to make this big idea into a reality. #ThankATeacher
