Break the Beta

Maya Madere had a wonderful service project idea: to create an exercise therapy program for children with developmental differences. Since Maya and I are both rock climbing coaches and are very passionate about our sport, she approached me with her idea and I was excited to help. The program will be entirely volunteer based and community funded, making it completely free for climbers and their families. Our mission is to empower children with additional needs such as autism, Asperger's, behavioral issues, and ADHD to live to their full potential.

Climbing is a fun and effective way to develop some of the areas that pose challenges to children with developmental differences. It stimulates and improves both fine and gross motor skills, balance, spatial awareness, and muscle tone, as well as exercising communication and social skills. It also boosts confidence and self-esteem by providing a concrete goal for the climber and giving them something to be proud of when they get to the top. Climbing therapy is already being used in numerous programs across the country, such as Climb Iowa's YAC Uplift climbing team and Splore's Rock On! Program in Utah.

Break the Beta is an indoor rock climbing program geared specifically for autistic, ADHD and at-risk children between six and twelve years old. It consists of five two-hour climbing sessions held on Friday afternoons at the South Austin Rock Gym, starting on May 6 and ending on June 3. Throughout the month, climbers will learn basic climbing skills, etiquette, and safety procedures while having fun and climbing in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment. The program is a loosely structured curriculum with a high instructor to climber ratio  to ensure that every child's specific needs will be addressed in a safe and controlled environment.

We received a generous discount from Austin Rock Gym in order to utilize the gym, but we still need to raise money to support the program. Please help support this project in any way you can from making a donation to spreading the word. Thank you so much for all of your support, we can't describe how much we appreciate it. Please let us know if you would like to volunteer, since we could use your help in making this program stellar!

All the best,
