In 2016 Lex continued to fight for justice for his own community of Palm Island and the greater Indigenous community of Australia. Recognised at the annual National Indigenous Human Rights Awards - Lex won  the Anthony Mundine Award for Courage

Since the 2004 Death in Custody of Mulrunji on Palm Island along with Lex's own incarceration and controversial gag order, Lex true to his beliefs has continued to stand up for human rights and highlight the systemic institutional racism recognised by the United Nations.
