The Los Angeles Metropolitan Debate League (LAMDL) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes access to the life changing activity of competitive policy debate for students in under-served LA area public high schools.
Competitive debate engages students in their own education, fosters motivation, and develops critical thinking skills. It offers a range of learning opportunities to a wide variety of students across, the academic spectrum, including those who are struggling in the traditional class-room. In debate, students across the country debate a single complex policy question, or resolution, for an entire year. Debaters conduct extensive research on the resolution and develop arguments for and against it. They hone their arguments in after-school practices and compete at weekend tournaments.
When LAMDL was launched in 2007, it joined a national network of Urban Debate Leagues in 24 major U.S. cities. Research from that network indicates that students who participate in policy debate are more likely to graduate from high school with the skills they need to succeed in college and careers. After controlling for past academic performance and other variables debaters are three times less likely to drop out than their peers and achieve significantly higher scores on the ACT, indicating greater readiness for college.
Former debaters, parents, coaches, and teachers know that competitive debate is a life-changing opportunity for students to develop the skills that they need to succeed in high school, college, and beyond. Unfortunately, not all students in Los Angeles have this opportunity. Because of the ongoing budget crisis facing Los Angeles schools, many students no longer have access to the academic extracurricular activities that were once offered in their schools. With your support, we can bring the life-changing benefits of debate to even more students in Los Angeles area public schools. Even small contributions can make a major difference for LAMDL and the amazing students that we serve.
