Support Our 2018 Funding Goals

Tax deductible
We are seeking funding for specific development needs to enable our transition into becoming a public garden. These needs will provide immediate benefit to Peckerwood Garden and our supporters.

Donors may choose to donate an in-kind physical item in place of financial donation.

Peckerwood Garden Conservation Foundation was founded to protect the collection, develop and conserve the vision of John Fairey, and to continue his work and collection expeditions as well as become an educational resource.

Founded in 1971 by Artist and teacher John Fairey, Peckerwood Garden has expanded from 6.75 acres to 40 acres. More than 100 expeditions for collection, conservation, research, and collaboration have expanded the collections of rare and endangered species. Collaborations, exchanges, and trials with other gardens, arboreta, and collections have developed the broad display of over 4000 species to include all continents (except Antartica) but maintained the focus on plants that grow well in our environment and that thrive in our conditions.

We seek to develop and nurture understanding and personal connection to nature and gardening in the community. We offer guided tours of our protected garden, monthly lectures and educational classes, monthly special open days and focused tours. Private tours, special dinners and event, and other community events are becoming more frequent as we develop.

Small items for quick guest service include:
- Deck replacement in Garden $5,000
- Fountain wall repairs in the garden. $3,500
- Generator to keep greenhouse running in case of power outage. $1,000
- Replacement irrigation pump for north of creek to maintain Greenhouse nursery and garden water needs. $1,000
- Chairs and tables for events and classes. $2,000
- Industrial Chipper $3,000
- Water Storage Tanks $30,000

We also have need of a new pickup truck for the garden, event and lecture sponsors, Electrical repairs and upgrades, materials for pathways and parking development for the new areas of the garden.

Items that have been funded through this or by donors due to this:
- An exterior door for the Guest restroom (special size and install into a concrete wall.) $800 -
-A chipper that will maintain basic needs until the full need is met.
-New pump, plumbing, and repairs to the nursery irrigation system to allow us to grow plants for the Spring sales.
-Electrical repairs to the nursery are planned for early this year.

Though John Fairey’s legacy will always be the centerpiece of Peckerwood, it is only the beginning of what our property has to offer to those who want to experience nature. With primitive trails through the natural areas already in development, we soon will make the “wild” areas more accessible to visitors in the future. Aside from those who want to escape the concrete jungle of Houston, our own local residents of the city of Hempstead could utilize the garden as a convenient place to experience nature. As we develop our educational programs for young and old, having this balanced synthesis with cultivated and natural features in one location will prove to be integral in our missions.
