The word "cancer" hits you like a freight train - especially when it's happening to one of your favourite people in the world.
The universe broke the mold when it came up with the Red Diablo, aka First Mate Kate, aka Katharine Meredith Allan. Charismatic and witty, spontaneous and whip smart, Kate is a true original – not to mention one of the most loyal, generous people around. She lives life to its fullest, traveling the world, rocking out at concerts and meeting lifelong friends wherever she goes.
Kate has always been a tough cookie. It’s a good thing she’s an Aries with a stubborn streak, because she has suddenly come up against something no one asks for: colon cancer (sidebar: FUCK YOU, 2016). She is taking this news in characteristically brave and humorous fashion, and her positivity and fortitude will serve her well in the days and months to come as she faces a long road of surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation over the next year.
While they have medical coverage from Michael’s company, there are many things that won’t be covered – missed work, extended oncology treatments, medication, care requirements and who even knows what else. Mike’s medical plan also only covers so much, with the two of them left responsible for making up the difference. We want Kate and Mike to be able to focus on what is important and not worry about mounting medical bills and financial stress.
Anyone who knows these two knows they would (and have) given the shirts off their backs to help their family and friends. They are going to rock this thing out together and we are going to surround them as a community with all the positive vibes, love, banter, hugs and support we can. Thank you so much for helping these wonderful people during this challenging time.
