Before I Leave

Debra and I never had a discussion that required us to think about what either of us wants before we leave. We were not prepared for what has taken place the last three and a half years. Here we are and I have been left with all the decisions.I thought and hoped that Debra would recover and return home. All the other things she lost we were able to manage at home before the G-Tube placement and cardiac arrest resulting in respiratory failure.All my family, friends and coworkers understand the tragic events that have befallen Debra Grier. I reiterate that I am ill prepared for what comes next. We are financially ruined from so many out of pocket medical expenses dating back to early spring of 2016. We have exhausted Debra’s retirement fund, sold stock, maxed out every credit card and dipped into my retirement fund. I did everything humanly possible to keep her safe, treated fairly and be rehabilitated.Here we are after hospitalization and being ventilator dependent since September of 2018. It never got better, only worse. Bad news followed by more bad news. I never gave up and most importantly Debra never gave up.She’s going home to God now and all we can do is keep her comfortable and be with her till it’s time. We can talk and sing to her, and we are doing that. She cannot communicate, not since mid summer of 2018. I realize now that what I wished I heard from her before all this is : Before I Leave...
