Sponsorship For Harvard Pre College Programme

Donation protected
My name is Joseph Hinchcliffe, I am in year 12 and at present, I am a student attending sixth form at Ysgol Brynhyfryd in Denbighshire, North Wales. I am currently studying; Biology, Chemistry, Geography and Welsh Baccalaureate at A level. I have been enrolled on the Seren Network initiative as a result of my outstanding results at GCSE. This summer I have been successfully awarded a scholarship placement at Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA, and I am currently seeking sponsorship in order to make this possible. I will be on this course between the dates of the 8th and 19th of July. I consider myself very fortunate to have secured a position on this placement, as there were very few places available throughout the entire country. Over the course of this visit I will be Studying Criminal Law at the best law school in the world, and I will also be taking part in extracurricular activities such as visiting America’s first public beach, watching a performance at the famous Cirque du Soleil and watching a Boston Red Sox baseball game! As part of the extremely competitive application process, I was required to select a course that really interested me and out of all the courses that were available, I chose ‘An Introduction to Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure by Tiffany Nichols’, who is a lecturer at Harvard University and an experienced lawyer. In this course, I will develop an understanding of how the law works in America and their approach to criminal trials, depending on the severity and type of crime. I chose this course as I am passionate about a career in law and I know how prestigious Harvard University is, especially with regards to its Law School. Therefore, as an aspiring lawyer this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I chose this particular course because it was the most appealing law course offered as I get to take part in a mock trial at the end, which will be a unique opportunity to practically apply the skills and knowledge I will gain. This course also appealed to my strong moral compass, I would love to be able to prosecute and defend individuals to ensure that justice is fairly served for the crimes that they have or have not committed. Other skills I will gain during this placement include, using the Socratic Method, presenting opening and closing arguments, reading, analysing and briefing cases and the different styles of prosecution and defence. I believe that this course will allow me to learn to live and study independently, and also give me the foundations of skills and knowledge which will help me to advance towards my career goal of eventually becoming an amazing lawyer. The Seren Network funds the educational aspect of the visit mutually with the Welsh Government, which includes accommodation, cost of tuition and meals. However, transport costs, flights and transfers, are not included within this funding. Therefore, I aim to raise seven hundred pounds to cover the cost of flights, so that I may fly to the USA and make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity. Financial support would be greatly appreciated to fund the costs of travel and to allow me to grab this opportunity with both hands and hone the skills that will benefit me in the future when studying law in university and when I’m working as a lawyer. Thank you for your support.
