In loving Memory of Yan Kong: mother, friend, guardian angel.

Please donate to help the family with funeral expenses.

Yan Kong, 70, passed away on Monday, June 10th, 2019 in her home in Oakland, California, with her two sons Buna Som, 42, and Patrick Kong, 30, by her side.

Yan Kong was born on January 1st, 1949 in Battambang, Cambodia. She was the daughter of Chhoeum Bea, mother, and Ya Kong, father. As a child, Yan lived with her grand aunt where she spent most of her time. She learned how to cook, garden, basic life skills for survival, and how to fend for herself. Her mother would give her small amounts of money for food, which she saved to buy drama-movie magazines and lots of desserts instead.

When she was a young woman, she married a man who she had her first daughter and first son with. However due to the lack of medical resources in Cambodia during the time of conflict, the children fell ill and were not able to survive.

In 1977, Yan gave birth to a baby boy, Buna. Shortly after Buna was born, they lived in peace and made a life for themselves. As the war escalated, she and Buna escaped on foot to a refugee camp at the border of Thailand. From there they were transferred to Indonesia, where they were waitlisted for resettlement.

Once their names were called, they were bound to America. She felt a sense of peace in the air upon landing in North Dakota. They relocated to Los Angeles briefly, before residing with a large Cambodian community in Marin County.

In 1989, Yan gave birth to another baby boy, Patrick. She raised Buna and Patrick in Marin. Once Buna graduated high school, the family moved to Oakland, California.

In Oakland, Yan and her sons reunited with extended family and loved ones. She lived in peace and love, surrounded by her cousins, nephews, nieces, and wonderful church family.

She will always be remembered for her positive and uplifting aura, shining the light on anyone she met.

She cherished the time with her boys often fishing at various spots in the Bay Area.

Buna and Patrick would help her cook while she created an endless amount of new dishes.

She loved Cambodian dramas, gardening, sewing, music, dancing, and karaoke.

Yan is survived by her two sons, Buna Som and Patrick Kong, her two dogs, Lucy and Cindy, and her extended family in the Bay Area and Cambodia. Her warm heart, laughter, smile and humor will be missed dearly, but her wonderful spirit will surround all of us for eternity.

“Love everyone a like and never look down on humans or creatures. Keep pursuing to be kind in life.” - Yan Kong
