At approximately 8 pm on the evening of Wednesday, May 29th, our home and sailboat, The Bertie, was knocked down by a "White Squall," and capsized, 65 miles offshore of the New Jersey coast. We were literally swamped and swallowed under within 60 seconds; water rushed in and we were catapulted off the boat and into the ocean. We were able to climb up on to the bottom of the boat and see if we could dive for the emergency epirb device. No luck, it just was not within reach for the breath we had. About 30 minutes later, the boat started to roll back up, leaving the port side with access, and miraculously with the epirb in view, we grabbed and activated it. That was the last offering of life that Bertie gave us. Peter built Bertie with his own hands and poured years of blood, sweat and tears into her being.

Thanks to the heroic efforts of the US Coast Guard, we are still alive! We were plucked from the water, placed in a basket, hoisted up to the helicopter and shuttled to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center with nothing but our lives and just the cloths on our backs!

Everything we owned was lost to the sea ... our tools of the trade, phones, computers, passports, important documents, artwork, photography equipment, photos, travel mementos, home stuff ... everything. We had literally 1minute from the time the squall hit until we were thrown off the boat.

We are so very grateful that we are alive, sustained no injuries and have family who we love and love us, and that is THE most important part of this whole story. We are so grateful for all the help we received from the coast guard, the hospital administrators and the Red Cross. Any donations that you can offer to help us rebuild our lives and start over is wholeheartedly and grateful appreciated. We will update as we learn more from the Coast Guard and watch events unfold in our lives. Please stop by our BERTIE Facebook page if you want to learn more about who we are and who the majestic Bertie was!! We thank you all for the bottom of our hearts.

The dream isn’t over, it’s just a new chapter ...

Dearest friends & family!

3 non-stop busy weeks have passed since our misadventure at sea, and we wanted you to know that through your financial contributions, we are no longer homeless! We purchased a new-to-us, 2006 Sprinter Van, which is now our home-on-wheels while we regroup, visit family and decide what’s next. On Monday 6/17, we moved aboard and joined all of the other road warriors out there. And let us tell you ... it’s scarier on the roads than it is on the high seas!!

It’s been a whirlwind of activity, working hard every day to get back on our feet. Good news ... we FINALLY got our passports last week thanks to teamwork, connections & assistance from some key people back home in Washington state; Michelle Sandoval, City Council member & former mayor of Port Townsend and Cherie Williams, Director of Constituent Services at US Congressman Derek Kilmer’s office. Until Cherie intervened, advocating for us at the NY Passport Agency, we were getting nowhere fast. Thank you, thank you, thank you Cherie, Derek and Michelle for helping us to more swiftly reestablish our identities! Without you, we would likely still be trying! [side note/lesson learned: if any disaster or mishap ever befalls you, work w/your local government; they are there to help their constituents!!]

Next step for both of us is to recoup lost tools of our trade. With your help, Peter purchased a foundational set of carpentry and maintenance tools to build or fix almost anything, and he’ll continue to look for some of the rare, specialty tools he lost, which will enable him to get some income flowing. If anyone has a set of ship caulking irons and a mallet at a good price, he’s interested. Heidi will slowly gather her lost tools and needs to buy a new laptop, so she can continue to earn money while doing her work online.

Many thanks to our family and friends, old and new, who’ve made it possible to recover with dignity and hope for the future. We are extremely grateful and so very humbled by the continued outpouring of love, compassion and support. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as our new life unfolds!

Yesterday was one week since the accident and tragic loss of our beloved BERTIE. This first week has been a zigzagging boondoggle of admin, organizing our losses and running hard into red tape as we try to reestablish our identities without any ID. The Powers-That-Be do not make it easy to procure new birth certificates, passports, driver’s licenses and other forms of personal identification! It’s rather like digging a tunnel with a spoon, and finding a brick wall at each crossroad. Nothing about this process has been easy or a straight line!

We have been staying with relatives in NYC for the past week, and want to share several gratitudes. The first of course, is just to be alive!! Secondly, we have been overwhelmed and humbled by the outpouring of love and support from friends & family, FaceBook friends we have never actually met, and total strangers who are helping us out of the goodness of their hearts. We feel such gratitude to all of you, and to simply say thank you seems inadequate, but we offer you a huge THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!!

All of you have made this difficult transition more bearable. Losing all of our belongings; tools of the trade, boat equipment, self-created and collected art, cameras, computers, favorite clothing, and every this-n-that that you can think of, as well as losing the result of 40 years of work in a matter of 90 seconds was extremely difficult. But ... life is forward, not looking back in a rear view mirror with regret and self-pity. Bertie had a soul that was palpable, so yes, we feel a deep sense of loss and grief in our hearts and minds for a part of our family who is no longer with us, but many people have lost much more. Most importantly, we still have each other and we did not get physically injured ... and that is the biggest blessing of them all!!

We wholeheartedly thank all of you for your compassionate outpouring of love and support, and look forward to keeping in touch and sharing our lives with you. Here’s to more adventures ahead of us!
