A beautiful mother, wife, daughter, teacher, leader and friend was rocked by the discovery of a brain tumor. What were thought to be panic attacks, bouts of anxiety and depression turned out to be the work of a 6cm mass in the front left portion of Emily’s brain. After dropping her daughters off at school on Wednesday, May 15 Emily had a seizure while driving home. She somehow managed to park her car and a kind soul stopped to help calling 911 and she was taken to the Emergency Room at North Memorial hospital. It was here that the mass was discovered and the course of Emily’s life took a dramatic detour.

A person can diligently strive to dictate their own course but reality often reveals how ill equipped we are to control the uncontrollable. Emily and I have never been good at asking for help. In fact we are quite inept when it comes to accepting assistance out of fear of being the inconveniencing charity case. This past season and especially this latest trial has taught us that we were never meant to walk life alone. Our life has been enormously enriched through those who have graciously traveled along side us. It has become abundantly clear that we certainly cannot do this alone.

The way in which this event has unfolded, we have been spared the challenge of making the difficult choices which often accompany life threatening health issues. By the grace of God, the proper course of surgery was immediately put into action. There were no impossible choices to make or options to consider as the next steps were made evident to our incredible health care team at North Memorial. I fear that, if given the opportunity to weight what the financial burden might be, we may have been tempted to take an inferior path.

It breaks my heart to know that I, as a husband, father and protector, I am unable to provide what is necessary to afford the care my family needs. In light of this, I am being lead to set my pride on the sideline and reach out for your help. As all to many of you know, the price of health care is not inexpensive. To my heart, the costs we are incurring feel like an insurmountable barrier to the life I desire for my wife and daughters. I am unable to do this on my own and, therefore, am asking for financial support. Whatever you might be able to offer is far more valuable than you may know. These donations are laced with love and compassion that strikes at the core of our family and has an effect beyond merely paying for healthcare. We are eternally grateful for your support.

Blessings,
