In February 2019, in the middle of my junior year of college attending the University of Kansas, I was hospitalized for what everyone presumed to be symptoms of Flu Type A and pneumonia, but little did anyone really realize that this was the start to a long and hard road to full health.
After a night of test after test, the next morning, I was informed that I showed early complications of heart failure known as left ventricular non-compaction syndrome. After a month and a half of prescribed heart failure medicines and biweekly checkups, unfortunately my situation took a turn for the worse when I was re-hospitalized in the prime of April, where over the course of a month, I endured a neck catheter insertion, two breathing pump insertions, two pulmonary test, three CAT scans, two X rays, and three ultrasounds. A day later, my family and I were informed that I was in need of a much needed heart transplant, so much so, that my cardiologist said I had the biggest heart he had seen in all his 20+ years of cardiovascular practice.
Two weeks after being admitted onto the transplant recipient list, I was blessed enough to receive a new heart and a second chance at life. Though the road to recovery hasn’t always been easy, just at 21 years old having to adjust to the 30 prescriptions I take daily, or the fact that I was unable to finish out my junior year of college, you see a lot having to live in ICU for a month. Realizing things could always be worse, there isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not grateful to God and how his favor trumps all oppositions.
My family is strong in spirit, but through all the blessings, still come the cost of it all. Life after transplant requires weekly biopsies, close cardiac supervision, and lifelong medicines. In order to ease some of the financial burdens my family is currently facing, I’ve decided to step out on faith and start my own campaign. Trying my best to consider all things that have happened, what I will need to continue to keep me on the progressive path to healing, and what I’ll need for the rest of my life, I’ve set a goal for what I think will help, but I pray, whatever’s placed on your heart to give, please do! No donation goes overlooked, and helps my family in greater masses you cannot possibly imagine.
