If you're here, then you probably saw my status update, so here are the logistics. The SI Borough President's Office has 5 designated sites for drop-off of supplies:
1) St. Christopher's Church Community Center, 136 Midland Avenue 10306
2) Cespino-Russo Post, 200 McClean Avenue 10305
3) International Christian Center, 1501 Richmond Avenue 10314

At the worst, we'll drop stuff off at *each* site, so we'll need at least two or three drivers. The more the better. Budget, CC Rentals, and other companies have trucks available right now. I need drivers (I'll be one), and I need more people to load and unload supplies from the stores. I know of at least 4 supermarkets in Astoria that are totally stocked. I think it'll be easier to drive from Queens to SI because of the Manhattan gridlock, so if volunteers can get to Astoria (the N will get you here), we'll be golden. Purchase and delivery of supplies to take place on Saturday (the marathon will shut down streets on Sunday, so we have to do this Saturday).
The biggest question here is money. I'm putting in money of my own, but the more people who donate, the more we can take out to the people in SI who need it. What really spurred this was watching yet another resident, in tears, begging for help on the news. No one should have to do that. We are all New Yorkers, so let's show it.

If you missed the status update I sent out, here it is: ATTENTION FB FRIENDS: I've been watching the continued coverage of the hurricane aftermath and I've noticed a common trend that I think we can help with: the lack of food, water, and other essentials in Staten Island (dubbed the "forgotten borough" by several news outlets). As New Yorkers, we're better than that. I've contacted the offices of State Senator Diane Savino and Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro about logistics, but here's what I want to do: rent a couple of trucks, fill "˜em full of food, water, and other basic supplies, and drive over the Verrazano to deliver these supplies to the people who need it. Their need is dire. Worst-case scenario is we deliver this stuff to the 5 designated sites for donations that are up on the Borough President's website right now. I want to do this this Saturday before the marathon shuts down the bridge on Sunday and before many of us go back to school on Monday. My supermarkets in Astoria are entirely stocked up, and I feel bad that we have all this stuff when the people who need it most don't have it. Here's the deal: I need people to drive and/or load and unload stuff into those trucks along with me, who are available on Saturday, and most of all, money. Donations would go to the supplies themselves and the truck rentals (unless of course you have a truck or other big vehicle, then just donation of its time). I'm currently working on an official outlet for those donations, but right now I want a measure of interest (both of your personal time and money you want to donate). I'm also going to create an event page for this idea with more specifics and information.
