1921 Memorial Committee

On June 15th 1921 nine Perth Amboy Firefighters from Eagle Engine Co. #4 were killed in the line of duty when the new fire engine they were riding on struck a train at the railroad crossing by Market and Elm Street intersection.  Eagle Engine Co #4 was responding to Box 2-7 for the third time that day to extinguish a reported fire at the Iron and Metal Company's junk yard,  As the engine responded down Market Street several more firefighters were picked up as they came out of their homes.  The rail crossing gate had not been lowered and the roar of the engine was louder than the train whistle as the fire engine went around stopped cars it was too late and the train was struck.  Seven men were killed instantly and two more died later that night in the hospital.  This accident is the largest LODD in the history of the State of New Jersey.  As a result of this accident the rail crossings were lowered and overpasses were built.   No Memorial was ever created to Honor these brave firefighters. As we close in on the 100th Anniversary of this tragic event, and the proposed renovation of the Perth Amboy train station the timing is correct for the creation of a long overdue fitting memorial.
