Figgy's Kids Foundation & Sewing Studio
HELLO WONDERFUL SUPPORTERS OF KIDS & CREATIVITY!!
This is all about the kids. With parents too busy to teach sewing, knitting, fashion design, screen printing or crochet (or need a class themselves) and the schools have eliminated Home Ec and creative classes, there are very limited places and spaces for the children to learn these invaluable skills.
In my home studio where I currently teach, it is busting at the seams! Your generous donation will help do the following: rent a space, paint and create sewing stations, acquire a POS system, new website and computer, hire professional teachers to meet the sewing class demands, offer a TON of amazing classes and purchase: high quality sewing machines, fabric & notions, cutting tables, cutting mats, needles, yarn & notions, chairs and tables.
It will be incredible to have funding to open the sewing studio but what I'm most excited about is what this space will allow me to do which is begin, the "Figgy's Kids" foundation. With the extra teachers and an open space to sew and create, I will be able to focus on hosting FREE open sewing days dedicated to creating New Handmade Garments & Quilts for kids in need. Once a month all will be welcome to come in for free sewing time to help create for a child in need.
The amount asked in donations is half the amount to create the studio and purchase most of the equipment. Once my goal is reached any extra funds will help me achieve my long term goal which is to offer scholarships and grants to those who can't afford to purchase a class. These classes will teach skills that they can keep with them for a lifetime. Perhaps one day because of these classes, they'll grow up and teach other kids like I do.
The Importance of Handmade
A Little About Me: 4 years ago I began my own a sewing pattern company, "Figgy's Patterns". During these last few years I was able to co-author a book called "Sewing for Boys" and teach an online class for Craftsy ! I've made some television, magazine & newspaper appearances all in reference to sewing and teaching. I've enjoyed all of that, but my most favorite thing I've been doing these last few years is teaching children how to sew. I live just outside Portland, Oregon with my husband and two boys who are tired of being on the wait list for one my classes.
