I'm Dave Stone, and till about eight years ago I would have happily called myself a writer. I wouldn't have had to think twice about it. I even had a degree of professional success, writing comics, novels and audio scripts for such notable British characters as Judge Dredd and Doctor Who.
I have certain, quite profound, autistic-spectrum traits, which pose severe problems in interacting with people ... and, as anyone can tell you, the creative world can be a remarkably stressful, cut-and-thrust affair. Eight years ago I had a complete mental break.
I spent more than half a decade more or less existing as a zombie (not the fun kind) and came out of it with chronic depression and an acute Anxiety Disorder - on the level that it's a Good Day, in day-to-day life, when I can make it out to buy milk at the shop.
My contact with the world is now almost exclusively online, where I am attempting ro rebuild what might be called a Creative Life. The creation of text and images that I can put out there on my own terms and free from stress.
This campaign was started so that I could get a basic Graphics Tablet to work on. It was remarkably successful in that I achieved that goal in less than a week, plus funding for ancillary things like a scanner so I could work with my physical art.
I'm leaving it open, now, as simply a place where people can donate to me if they like the things I produce. There are many, many resources I would love to be able to afford, which would be impossible to get on the Benefit-ralated income I have.
Anything donated here will go to directly to improving what I want to do creatively - be it maintaining the set-up I have, buying a camera on a level that's not embarrasing to anyone with a mobile phone, or helping me save up for a computer which isn't ancient and falling apart.
I've reset the 'goal' to £1,000. This is simply so that it gives the bar somewhere to move (if it ever does) and adds a sense of progression. Please don't think it's a Fundraiser Target that I'm going to pester anyone to achieve.
Please - and I cannot stress this enough - only donate if you mean it as a personal token of appreciation and goodwill towards me. There are far more deserving people to donate to, and help, if you want to do that.
