WIDT Keep Us Dancing

Donation protected
For over 24 years Whidbey Island Dance Theatre (WIDT) has been helping to educate and prepare young, aspiring dancers for professional dance careers.  Starting at the age of 13, WIDT gives young dancers the experience of performing in professional style productions, working alongside elite professional choreographers from all over the country, and attending the necessary dance classes required to maintain their high level of technique.  We are proud to say that many of our company dancers are able to keep up a full schedule of class and rehearsals while still achieving high marks in school.

Whidbey Island Dance Theatre is so much more than just an “experience” for these young dancers.  This is the place where many of them grow up, make life-long friends and find a home away from home.  Our founder, Charlene Brown, has become like a second mother to many of these young dancers and a close personal friend.  It is easy to see that this organization has had a positive impact on many young people in our small Langley community.

WIDT is primarily supported by company fees paid by the families of the 18 company student dancers and by an annual benefit auction and smaller fundraisers throughout the season.  Community businesses contribute with in-kind sponsorship, donations and program advertising.  The annual performance of The Nutcracker, now in it's 23rd season, runs for eight performances over two weekends.  Nutcracker ticket sales usually net a modest profit.

We sincerely thank our community for the many years of support in volunteerism, attendance, advertising and donations that they have provided every year to keep WIDT growing. Unfortunately, after 23 years, WIDT is struggling to stay afloat.  The budget deficit is not currently manageable with the usual fundraising efforts even while board members are generously contributing to “keep the lights on”. The costs to mount Nutcracker 2015 are considerable.

We are asking for your support in order to keep this organization alive.  It has been a place of love for many young dancers and a cultural staple for the Whidbey Island community.

We hope that the world of dance enthusiasts, art lovers, community heroes, theater goers and philanthropists will choose to join our small community to keep us dancing.
