Help me get my masters

Donation protected
6 years ago I was a single parent, on benefits, with a drinking problem and chronicle mental health problems that saw me hospitalised and charge from one crisis to the next taking no responsibility for my actions. I thought my life wasn't worth living, I could see no future.

But on 27th July 2009 I stopped drinking. It wasn't easy, and there have been times when I've clung to sobriety by my fingertips. I realised that there are things that I can control. I no longer self-harm, I still have peaks and troughs with my mental health, but my coping skills are now positive ones and not negative ones.

In 2011 I applied for, and got, a place at Northumbria University to do a degree in criminology. I had dreamed of going to university since I was a small child, learning and understanding is my passion.

Initially I needed help from an occupational therapist to even enable me to get onto campus, as the metro journey and just being around so many people caused me panic and distress.

It took me 4 years to get my degree due to a massive slump in my mental health in the winter of 2013/2014 which saw me in hospital for a month and a recuperation of over 7 months, but on 26th June 2015 I found out that I had gained a 2:1 degree and now hold a Bsc (Hons) in Criminology.

I have already been accepted to do a Masters of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Northumbria University but I cannot qualify for a bursary despite being a single parent and a disabled student as my Student fees were charged at the 2011 lower rate throughout my degree, and not the now higher rate.

So to continue my studies, and to help me achieve my goal of helping young people who have experienced substance abuse, and then found themselves falling into a criminal lifestyle, I need to raise money for course fees and to help support me and my 3 children.

I don't like taking hand-outs. I'm looking for work. But as a disabled person with mental health problems and a young child still in primary school it's not easy.

If you could help me in any way to fund my masters I would be grateful. I want to be able to pass what I have learned forward, and help some young people realise that they can change the narrative of their lives.

Thank you x

Diane
