A wanted criminal was arrested Thursday night after he allegedly stole a car and led police on a chase in Vancouver, officials said.“It felt like a really bad dream,” carjacking victim Jennifer Thomas told KOIN 6 News. “He popped up and told me that he wasn’t going to hurt me, but I needed to shut up and drive.”

After a day of work at her family’s bakery, Thomas said she knew something was off when she noticed strange keys in the front seat of her car.

“He had been in the backseat hiding underneath a blanket,” she said.

The man, 23-year-old Scott Lavelle, was reportedly hiding from police in Thomas’ backseat. The young mother said she noticed he was holding what looked like a black handgun behind her.

“He had it pointed at my side here, he was sitting kind of curled around my seat so his head was here,” she explained. “I actually started the car for him and got out so he could drive. I said, ‘here, the car works, you can drive, I will leave my phone for you so I can’t call police.'”

Thomas said the suspect grabbed her by the arm and shook her in an attempt to make her drive. Finally, she said, he gave in and allowed her to leave the running car.

“I told him I can’t drive, I have to get home to my baby,” Thomas said. “I have to get home to my baby.”

That’s when Lavelle took off, and around 6:30 p.m. police attempted to pull him over for driving at a high rate of speed on 119th Street, Clark County Sheriff’s Office said. When he failed to stop, the 23-year-old sent police on a chase through the neighborhood.

He eventually crashed in the area of 39th Street and Main Street and fled on foot, deputies said.

A 911 reverse call was sent out to Vancouver residents to alert them of the situation.

Around 8:40 p.m., Lavelle was taken into custody after he was taken down by a police K9 unit, officials said. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a dog bite.

Lavelle is expected to be booked into Clark County Jail on charges of first-degree assault, attempt to elude police, first-degree robbery, kidnapping and attended hit-and-run.
