Fellowship for Nonprofit Marketer

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Melissa and I want to develop software that helps nonprofit organizations and schools.

I am a field marketer currently working for the San Francisco Conservation Corps, a nonprofit  that helps teens complete high school, and obtain a career in Green sectors (solar power, energy conservation, recycling, etc).

I also volunteer in the Fundraising committee of a local elementary school in my community in Oakland, coordinating events and helping raise funds that go towards educational programs and excursions for the kids.

For schools and nonprofits, outreach events and grassroots efforts are vital to their success. But it is often too costly to execute, and too time consuming to manage. Frequently schools & nonprofits utilize inefficient methods; relying on paper documentation and using outdated technology that creates redundancies and is prone to failure.

They fail to be responsive, are unable to capitalize on online resources, and create wastefulness.

The software that could solve this problem has not been created yet.

The fields of social work and events management are women-led, and with such underrepresentation of women in tech, it is no surprise that there is a lack of technologies catering to nonprofits and event planners.

I want to change that.

I want to attend Hackbright Academy’s Software Engineer fellowship  (tuition $15,000) and expand my skillset to include web & software development.

The many ways I will help my community through this fellowship:

1. I will develop field marketing software/program suitable for nonprofit organizations and schools. It will improve the efficacy of outreach campaigns and fundraising events. Thus, allowing for more efforts and resources to go where they are needed the most.

2. Bring nonprofit organizations and schools up-to-speed with technology, improving: internal communications, data storage, security.

3. Increase the online footprint of nonprofits through: website development, social media, and other digital marketing strategies.

4. Breakdown barriers for minority women, such as myself, in tech.

Your investment in this scholarship will be paid-forward indefinitely. Thanks for your support!
