New Life for Lydia

Donation protected
In November 2007, Lydia was working for NYC Administration of Children Services as a CPS agent. She had previously injured her leg and over time the pain had worsened enough that she went to the hospital to seek medical treatment. Her doctors decided to run additional tests, and discovered she was severely anemic, and had limited kidney function.  She would need weekly Procrit injections in an attempt to regulate her system. She was then placed on the transplant list with an indefinite wait time.

Lydia continued to work, but by years end her blood count dropped to 3…EVEN WITH THE TREATMENT. She made her job aware of her dire situation and provided the necessary documentation. Her condition worsened and she began fainting while becoming progressively weaker; requiring more time off than expected. Even through the ups and downs Lydia continued to work as much as she could. Only to find out in June 2008, her company had been building a case against her and she had been dismissed from her job (which meant she lost her health insurance and income). Without a job and insurance, even if a kidney came Lydia would no longer be able to afford the transplant.

July 2009, Lydia sued the NYC Administration of Children Services for a Human Rights violation. Even though she won her case, due to her extensive medical bills, Lydia had to declare bankruptcy by the end of 2009. While all of this was happening Lydia found a shorter transplant list in Pennsylvania, so her and her long-time boyfriend made the move to get her the medical attention she needed.

Finding work after the move for Lydia was a struggle because she required three hours for three day a week of dialysis; which meant potential employment opportunities were limited.  After a long battle of unemployment her local Old Navy hired her despite her restrictions. Lydia quickly became like family to everyone in the store, she was always smiling and putting others first even with her daily struggles.

June 7, 2015 Lydia finally received the call she had been waiting 7½ for. On June 8th she went in for transplant surgery. While she is out of work recovering she has no income of her own to help pay for her medical bills, living expenses, and the extensive list of medication she has been put on to prevent rejection.

Lydia cannot finance this by herself. We as her Old Navy family are seeking funding to help mitigate the loss of her income.  Any and all contributions will be greatly appreciated, as Lydia has a long road of recovery ahead of her.
