I'm not writing to you for myself, but for my Mom, Dawn, and Step-dad, or Step-Danny as we call him (his name is Danny if you didn't get that). Almost a year ago my step-sister had a baby. We call him Bug. During her pregnancy she was on drugs and the baby was born addicted. He tested positive for Heroin, Marijuana, Opiates, and a few other things. He spent the first month of his life in the NICU at Kosair's hooked up to so many different wires, fighting his addiction like a trooper. He's a very strong boy and kicked his addiction in record time. Until he was 6 months old, he continued living with his mother, who really never took care of him. She never stopped using and neglected him. We tried everything we could to get him away from her, but she kept dodging CPS. Right before Christmas of 2014, we got amazing news, my parents had received temporary custody of Bug. We were all beyond excited. It finally meant Bug had a stable place and people who would love and take care of him. After a long and tiring process in and out of courts, last week, both of Bug's parents gave up their rights and my parents received full permanent custody.
My mom and step-dad never thought they would be in their 40's and raising a grandchild. They both work full time, but taking care of a baby is expensive. They get a little help from the State, but it's never enough. Another blow that is about to hit them is that my step-sister is pregnant again. We think she is due next month, but don't know for sure because she has not gotten any prenatal care during this pregnancy. The court's drug tested her a little while ago and she tested positive for Heroin, Marijuana, Opiates, Cocaine, Methamphetamine, and lord knows what else. I really fear for what this new baby is going through right now, and what it will have to endure when it's born. When she has this baby, my parents are going to receive custody of it as well. One baby was hard enough on them, 2 is going to be a struggle, but they wouldn't have it any other way. I help out any time I can, but its still hard to make ends meet.
I've set up this page to try and help them with the cost of raising 2 grandbabies. Bug's Nana and Pawpaw are two of the most amazing people I know. They would do anything for their family, and didn't even think twice about taking Bug and this new baby. Anything can be helpful.
