The William Gaines Gwathmey Foundation

Mission Statement: The William Gaines Gwathmey foundation is a non-profit organizations aimed at helping children in lower-income areas learn valuable life lessons through the game of basketball.

Vision Statement:
Through our networking with underprivileged schools found through our partners United Way of the National Capital Area or Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington Area, we hope to

...involve members of the GW community with community service

...teach low-income communities life lessons through basketball

...have a bi-monthly initiative in these communities where all volunteers are welcome

...impart lasting lessons with all peoples involved

About us: William Gaines Gwathmey was not only known for his admirable smile and genuine care for others, he was known as an outstanding athlete who cared about the sport of Basketball. In the memory of William Gaines Gwathmey we will be raising money through various philanthropy events to establish basketball programs in low-income communities. These basketball programs will include basketball lessons from volunteers and new basketball equipment for the children who reside in these low-income areas. We will finance the equipment with donated proceeds from William’s friends and family. We will recruit volunteers who have prior experience to help us appropriately run our basketball programs. In our program we hope to bring the game that William loved so much to children who may not be as fortunate to have the proper equipment or training to play.

First Philanthropy Event: The first event in our foundation was a basketball tournament held by William Gwathmey’s friends in Washington DC. The basketball tournament was held on December 7th at LA Sports Club and the court was given to us free of cost. The tournament was a 3v3 tournament with 20 teams participating and over 120 people attending. The minimum donation to enter the tournament per person was $20 with an unlimited cap on the amount the individual wished to donate and each participant received a custom William Gaines Gwathmey jersey. We raised over $2,200 in cash donations and had additional contributions towards our GoFundMe page.

First Initiative: With donated proceeds from friends, families, and philanthropic events we will provide basketball equipment such as basketballs, cones, and jump ropes, among other essential training equipment. We will start the seminar by teaching basics of the game of basketball: dribbling, passing, shooting and others. We will reserve the last 10 minutes after each practice teaching core educational life lessons during snack time about the importance of friendship, family, competition, sportsmanship, and schoolwork, all lessons that William Gaines Gwathmey valued most.

Fund Raising Goals: Our short-term goal is to raise $20,000. We have already raised over $10,000 and are confident we will reach this goal by the end of 2015.

Getting into the community: To properly assert ourselves within the community we have partnered with Serve Your City DC. This partnership will allow us to properly build a relationship with a middle school in the DC community. Our goal is to partner with one school and build a long-lasting partnership that will have an impact for years to come. Through this partnership we will efficiently connect with the children that are interested in the game of basketball and need the guidance and resources, such as equipment, that our organization can offer.
