Wheels for Wellness
We need an ambulance to provide life-saving care and treatment to over 1,000,000 villagers in rural, remote Malawi.
Will you help us?
About GAIA
We are the Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance (GAIA), a secular nonprofit that delivers innovative and caring healthcare programs in resource-deprived regions in Africa, especially those most affected by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. Much of our work is focused in Malawi , one of the poorest countries in the world and an HIV/AIDS hotspot. With 84% of the population living in rural villages, millions of the most vulnerable live far off the healthcare grid without access to reliable disease prevention, treatment and care. When villagers become ill they have no choice but to walk several kilometers, often for an entire day, to the nearest clinic or hospital. This distance gravely impacts health, especially that of children and pregnant women.
Wheels for Wellness
Since 2008, GAIA’s mobile health clinics have travelled to the far end of the road in Malawi, providing life-saving care and treatment, including HIV testing and counseling, malaria testing and treatment, diagnosis and treatment of acute illnesses like pneumonia, and family planning. The clinics fill gaps in basic health care for those living far off the healthcare grid, bringing services to 35 sites weekly and within an hours’ walk for almost 1,000,000 villagers in the region.
Each mobile clinic uses a Toyota Land Cruiser, stocked with clinical supplies and medicines and staffed by clinical personnel. After a decade of daily wear and tear traveling rough roads to provide service, our ambulances are in critical need of replacement. In order to continue operations, and avoid interruption in care for people in rural areas who rely on us, we are trying to raise $15,000 to purchase a new vehicle by December 31, 2017.
Every Dollar Counts
Any amount you can donate, however small or large, will enable us to provide lifesaving care and treatment to some of the poorest people in the most remote regions of the world.
