Huntington's Disease (HD) is not well known even by medical professionals. When I married and discovered my husband was at risk of this disease we were told it was not hereditary - WRONG. We opted not to have children to avoid the 50% risk each child would have of inheriting the mutated gene that causes HD.
My passion for many decades has been to increase awareness to avoid such appalling mistakes. I now have the opportunity to be part of a project aiming to make a documentary to educate both professionals and the public.
Time is an issue as the producer and several members of the team have Huntington's Disease which carries about a 15 year life expectancy from onset of symptoms. Before death sufferers become totally dependent having lost all their abilities: to walk, talk, eat, and think normally.
