Slow Food Preservers Los Angeles

We are the Slow Food Preservers of Los Angeles.  We are  a new non-profit educational group and are in the process of reorganizing from the former UCCE Master Food Preservers LA.   For more info visit our website at www.sfpla.org
From 2011-2015 our volunteers were working very hard and teaching food safety and food preservation classes all over Los Angeles county. Our equipment and insurance were provided by the UCCE.
We were getting  a great response from the community, and our volunteers were being requested to conduct classes at many places around the county. Unfortunately, in the spring of 2015,  our administrator took a job in another state.  Because of a lack of "administrative oversight" our program was yanked out from under us.

After we were told the bad news, many of us got together and decided that somehow our mission should continue.  But how?  The need in the community is great, but how could we do it on our own?
We approached Slow Food Los Angeles, and they agreed that our mission was important and are letting us organize under their banner.  But Slow Food LA is an all volunteer non-profit organization as well, so we will need to be self-supporting.
Our volunteers are trained, willing and able. Sadly, the food preservation techniques that our ancestors used for hundreds of years are in danger of being lost to subsequent generations.  It is up to us to share the knowledge with everyone about how important it is to grow and preserve high quality food and empower our students them by giving them the knowledge how to do it.
Our amazing group of volunteers have been trained in all aspects of food Safety, safe food handling and food preservation, such as WaterBath canning, Pressure Canning, Pickling, making Yogurt and cheeses, and all types of fermentation such as sauerkraut, kimchi and kombucha.  Our volunteers want nothing more than to share this knowledge with as many people as possible.  We will offer FREE classes to the public and want to teach at fairs, farmer's markets, churches, synagogues, libraries, etc.   Anywhere there is an audience, we will be there.
We need these funds to pay for our "required liability insurance" (many venues will not let us teach unless we can show proof of insurance)  and we need  to purchase equipment such as canning equipment kits, jars and lids,  dehydrators, and basic kitchen equipment so our volunteers can go out and teach this to as many people as possible.
Please help us to continue our mission. Our group of over 40 volunteers are trained, ready and willing to donate their time to go out there and make a real difference in Los Angeles and Orange Counties by sharing these valuble food preservation techniques with you all.
We eventually hope to expand to all of Southern California and beyond.    We thank you in advance for your consideration and hope that you will help us to provide these free services to our local communites.
