Save Terre Haute's Harmony Hall

Donation protected
Harmony Hall, originally a mortuary with an underground tunnel that housed horse-drawn hearses and cadavers, was built in the 1930s in Historic 12 Points in Terre Haute, IN, and it has been home to the Terre Haute Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, the Banks of the Wabash Chorus, for the past 30 years.  Upon purchasing Harmony Hall, at the time called Garfield Theatre, in 1985 for approximately $140,000, the Banks of the Wabash Chorus took to remodeling the rundown theatre and putting it back in working condition by building a stage, replacing seating, removing moldy draperies, and so much more.  Since its renovation, Harmony Hall has been used by churches, local theatre groups such as Terre Haute Children’s Theatre, a female barbershop chorus, and every weekly rehearsal and roughly 90 shows presented by the Banks of the Wabash.

Over the past 30 years, the Banks of the Wabash Chorus has had its ups and downs from difficulty with finances to drops in membership.  Today, the Banks of the Wabash Chorus, once a 60 man chorus with multiple international appearances, is a 12 man chorus facing its worst financial hardship since purchasing Harmony Hall, and the Chorus is, unfortunately, facing the possibility of losing their home for good as their bank has started the foreclosure process.

As it currently stands, out of the original $140,000 mortgage taken out for the purchase, the Chorus currently owes approximately $6,000 to finish paying off the mortgage with $3,000 in back bills and fees to have utilities turned back on.  Overall, it will take approximately $10,000 to get Harmony Hall back on its feet.  The Chorus has already taken steps to make sure Harmony Hall can sustain itself by finding several long term renters for the Hall, but the Chorus is having trouble raising the $10,000 it will take to get the bills paid off.  So, we are asking you, our friends, family, fellow Barbershoppers and music lovers, and complete strangers, to help us by donating anything you can to help the Banks of the Wabash keep their home where memories and friendships have been made for 30 years and where they want to keep making memories and friendships for years to come.
