Clionians Abroad

The sisters of Alpha Clio need your help! We are proud to share that one of our actives, Sister Melody McAlister is studying abroad in The Netherlands for Fall 2015. Due to this, we are losing her rent for the semester she is gone. Those of us that will be living in the Clio house while she is away, are having trouble coming up with the money to cover her rent, and Melody is unable to pay it in addition to her study abroad fees. Please help us raise the money so we don't lose our precious House of Daisies!

Below is the personal statement Melody submitted that helped her gain acceptance into the program, this is an amazing opportunity for her and we don't want her to have an additional financial burden during this incredible experience. Thank you so much!

This is a very fascinating world that we live in. There are so many different cultures and people worth learning about, and this is the main reason why I want to go abroad. When I was born, my brother was 18 and already on his own so I was basically raised as an only child. I have always relied on my parents for help when I needed it because that’s the way it has been for so long. I’m going to be 20 years old, and while I’m still young I need to start fending for myself. I need to come out of the bubble I’ve been in my entire life and rely on myself instead of my parents. I need to learn important life skills such as budgeting money and adapting to new environments. I want to learn the ways of a new group of people, I want to diversify my life. It’s amazing the strides women have made in this world and it is amazing all of the opportunities we have, when not so long ago this was not the case. I would be foolish not to make the most of my life, as I am very fortunate. While I’ve made mistakes and had my fair share of lapses in judgment, I have always made up for them some way or another. I recently started volunteering as a member of the Geneseo Custodial Staff for mandated community service. Here I learned how lucky I am to be in college and able to pursue my dreams because some of the people I work with never had that chance. This is what made me realize that I have made childish decisions out of impulse and that I was taking advantage of the opportunities I have been given. This allowed me to learn about how to work on myself and I am proud of the person I have grown to be. I’m the first one in my family to go to college and while my family misses me they are so proud of the person I have grown into. I want to go abroad for them too, I want them to see that their little girl is capable of being on her own without mom and dad being just a drive away. I want them to see that the days of my immaturity are over and I think that going abroad will demonstrate this. I want to prepare myself for the bright future I have before and I think that this would be an amazing first step.
