Indigenous Youth Mentoring Program

Donation protected
The Indigenous Youth Mentoring Program (IYMP) is a program of Guadalupe Alternative Programs, a non profit inner city alternative school located in St. Paul, Minnesota. The mentoring program was funded for two years by the St. Paul children's Collaborative specifically to teach Indigenous youth traditional ceremonies. The youth attend Ojibwe and Dakota language classes, have weekly traditional/cultural sessions and have attended a variety of ceremonies specific to Ojibwe, Lakota, Dakota, Nakota and Arapaho cultures. They have experienced a variety of ceremonies including but not limited to healing, naming, teaching,  and other ceremonies as well as receiving guidance and direction in life from a ceremonial perspective from traditional elders and medicine people. Pictured are ten of twelve youth in the program with two mothers who are a very important aspect of the program. We are one and one half years into the two year program. Funding runs out in December 2015. We are seeking funding through Gofundme to extend the program for at least one more year. This program provided traditional teachings and opportunities to urban Native youth they otherwise may not have had the opportunity to experience.

The program coordinator is Mitch Walking Elk, enrolled member of the southern Cheyenne & Arapaho tribes of Oklahoma and an employee of Guadalupe Alternative Programs.
