Wisconsin Racing Formula Electric

Donation protected
Wisconsin Racing is a collegiate Formula SAE racecar team comprised of focused and experienced individuals who are passionate about automotive technology and the future of transportation. As engineering students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, we seek to push our education from theoretical classwork to practical applications of engineering by designing cutting edge Formula vehicles.

Founded in 1988, Wisconsin Racing has produced world-class, 1/3-scale Formula-style racecars that have successfully competed in international competitions held by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

These competitions consist of various static (e.g. Business, Design) and dynamic (e.g. Acceleration, Endurance) events, in which over 200 teams from around the globe compete. Wisconsin Racing has a decorated history, taking first at the World Championships in 2007 and most recently winning first place in Design and Business.

The goal every year at Wisconsin Racing is simple: to design, manufacture, and test the most innovative, aggressive, and visually appealing collegiate Formula racecar in the world. As we continue to forge ahead in the development of our internal combustion car program, Wisconsin Racing has decided to make the quantum leap into the next revolution of transportation: electric vehicles.

The object of this GoFundMe campaign is to raise the capital necessary to allow our engineering students to develop the skills needed to advance the electric transportation industry. Only with your help can we hope to complete Wisconsin Racing’s first ever electric car, the WR-217e.

From this campaign we are hoping to raise $20,000 in order to buy major electronic components necessary in the construction of an electric vehicle.

Here's a breakdown of some of our major component expenses:

$4800 - four electric hub motors
$4500 - four motor controllers
$1600 - planetary gearsets
$4800 - lithium polymer cells
$1400 - battery management system
$2200 - competition fee

Our plan for this vehicle is to use the existing chassis design from the 2015 Wisconsin Racing combustion vehicle. Using the design of the WR-215 provides a large advantage for us, in that, we can focus almost entirely on the optimization of electronic architecture of our vehicle. Our hybrid carbon fiber monocoque/steel spaceframe chassis will be outfitted with four electric hub motors, connected to a lithium polymer battery pack. This design will allow for all-wheel drive power delivery, yielding quicker acceleration and superior control. These benefits are further complemented by the implementation of torque vectoring (moving power side-to-side), thus increasing the agility and allowing faster corner entry and exit. Essentially, upon completion of our first electric formula car, Wisconsin Racing will be unveiling a vehicle far faster than any other car we have ever built.

To fund our research and manufacturing of our first electric car we have decided to start our sponsorship campaign here, at GoFundMe.  Even with the generosity provided by our corporate sponsors, we need your help to make this ambitious project a reality. At Wisconsin Racing, we strive to define the cutting-edge of technology and we never settle for mediocrity. Your donations will be used to purchase essential electronic components necessary to create the most advanced Formula SAE formula vehicle imaginable.

Sincerely,

Jack Ryan
