10th Annual Build A Bike

Utica Safe School Healthy Students (USSHS) is a local 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that has a long standing history in this community of providing much needed social emotional supports to youth in Oneida County School Districts to help "Enhance Student Success by Reducing Barriers to Learning"-to keep kids in school where they belong. We have had tremendous success helping young people improve their grades, attendance and discipline so that they can be successful in school and ultimately join our community as productive, well-adjusted citizens.
USSHS has annually held a Build A Bike event where we take donated bikes and bike parts, work with volunteer bike mechanics, and we fix up the bikes and give them away to children in our community for FREE along with a new bike helmet! Our event also includes a Community Health and Wellness Expo where we have over 35 local providers who give kids and families much needed information that will improve their health and well-being.
Last year we held our 9th annual Build A Bike and we had over 1500 people attend the event from low-income families and we gave away 924 re-built bikes along with a new helmet! Our event has grown so much in size and scope over the past 9 years that we now host it at the Utica Memorial Auditorium (The Auditorium). This is an entirely free event that we have hosted as an agency community service project.
This year we will embark on our 10th Annual Build A Bike event and we hope to give away more than 1,000 bikes! As one can probably imagine this is a huge undertaking and one that requires a great deal of community support. We estimate that it costs us close to $40,000 annually to run the event and as a non-profit in these tough economic times, it has become increasingly more difficult for us to bear the entire cost.
Every bit counts and every dollar helps to make our event better and put another bike in the hands of a child in need, who otherwise, couldn't afford one.
