Wheels of Life Beaumont

The Special Needs Assistance Foundation is a local charity in Beaumont Alberta that helps individuals and groups with disabilities raise funds for necessary equipment and assistive devices. Wheels of Life Beaumont is our campaign to help the Beaumont Composite High school obtain a 16 passenger wheel chair accessible bus for their skills class. We are also raising funds to build a secured quonset to store the bus at the school as well as money to paint and wrap the bus in decals.  We are planning to raise an estimated $42,000 this year to purchase and donate the bus to the school. There is a fee of 9% charged by Go Fund Me for processing donations and assisting us in raising the funds.

The skills class is for children with developmental disabilities. Part of the curriculum for the skills class is a work experience program where the children have jobs at local stores and restaurants and with supervision, get to perform a variety of tasks to gain experience in the work industry and a sense of accomplishment.

Another important part of their curriculum are the shopping trips. Students are taken out to local grocery stores and each has a list and a budget and purchase personal items on their own. This is a great way for them to learn about money.

Students of the skills class also get to participate in a weekly swim at the rec centre and a treat at the local Tim Hortons where they get to order on their own and sit with their peers to develop and practice their social skills.

This has been the normal routine of the skills class for the majority of the students until recently when the school board changed its policy on how students are transported. Now only a few of the children are able to participate and the swimming and Tim Horton’s field trips are no longer. If the class had a 14 passenger wheel chair accessible bus, it could transport all of the children and the field trips could once again be part of their regular curriculum. There is also a new student arriving to the school in September 2015 who is wheel chair bound. With this bus, the school would be able to transport him to field trips for his class as well.

A wheel chair accessible bus would benefit the students of Beaumont Composite High School tremendously. We are asking for your support. With your help we can reach our goal and give these kids back their fieldtrips. Please donate today, every dollar makes a difference.
