KEEP OUR COMMUNITY OPERA HOUSE OPEN!

Huber Opera House & Civic Center, Inc.

157 East High St. Hicksville, OH  43526

IN 1999, OUR THEATER WAS IN SUCH BAD SHAPE THAT MANY PEOPLE THOUGHT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN TORN DOWN!

Originally built in 1882 as a hotel, the theater was added on in 1895 for traveling professional entertainers on their way to Broadway in New York.  The Huber was a busy, popular theater throughout the vaudeville era providing entertainment for rural northwest Ohio. Over time the usage changed and it became a movie theater and later fell into disrepair and earned a bad reputation as a poorly run night club.

Then a group of concerned local residents banded together, purchased the building and began the extensive cleanup and repair. They formed a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.   Now we have a beautiful landmark in the center of our downtown for theatrical and school productions as well as a place for weddings and other community gatherings.  Our county health department uses our community room monthly for children’s vaccinations.  The first floor has been restored, as close as possible to its original condition with the vast majority of the work done by our volunteers!  Many of our performers have commented that this is the nicest, most beautiful place they have ever performed!

We want to keep this local treasure a part of our community. It is an ongoing financial struggle. We have a large mortgage to pay each month along with utilities, insurance, continued renovation, etc.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP.

Your donation will help us to finish our renovations and make this a reality.  Some of our most immediate needs:  pay off the mortgage, make our building completely handicapped accessible, improve community access to the arts by bringing professional performers in addition to local productions, finish restoring the upstairs lobby and museum, finish restoring the balcony, put in permanent seating throughout both levels, ceiling fans for better heat circulation, new lobby carpeting, and new stage lights.  This is only a partial list of our current needs but includes some of the most important items.

We love our theater and hope you will support us financially and by visiting to see one of our shows.  If you are in the area stop in and see us.  One of our volunteers is often available to give tours or a tour can be scheduled any time by contacting our office.  You should see our restored antique curtain. It’s just beautiful!
