Rooting for Ryker

Rooting for Ryker- will he walk again?

One winter night in 2010, I came home to my parents house to find that my Mum had rescued a little puppy. I came into the living room and there in the corner was a small, very thin, very young, very terrified looking, champagne coloured German Shepherd. He'd been found in his deceased owners house, having been stuck there for days alongside the body. The Vet that he was taken to knew my Mum, more importantly, the Vet knew my Mum had a soft spot for shepherds, and that was the end of that.

Ryker has grown from strength to strength since then, he is full of character. He's now four years old and bounces about like a crazy fool. He is incredibly beautiful, stunning and gentle. Everybody that meets him is instantly in love. He is loyal, especially with my Mum, he and her other GSD, Sisko, are her absolute world. Her 'boys'. The three of them cannot be separated. He is a huge member of our family but so so young.

Last week, Ryker was unusually quiet. He was slightly dragging his hind paw. Within a day, he had almost lost all feeling in his rear legs and was in pain in back and tummy, lots of it. A Vet they went to ran blood tests, put him on antibiotics but there was little help and suggested putting him to sleep before he had even been diagnosed. My parents are refusing to give up this quickly (its only been a matter of days!) and today have found another wonderful Vet who has taken Ryker in and has immediately set to work - Ryker is undergoing spinal surgery, as I am typing this. It apparently may take hours, through the night and we still dont really know what happened. It's a risky surgery but maybe the only way to help him live, let alone walk again.

I am humbly asking for your help on behalf of our family, and for Ryker, who is far too young to be taken so quickly and cruelly. My parents are facing large vet costs and will do anything to help him, we are all digging deep, we have paid as much as we can but this is completely unexpected and something that he will need lots of aftercare  and ongoing treatment for before he will be able to walk again. We sadly cannot afford this without your help.
Ryker is a dog, but he is FAMILY. I cannot put a value on him for he is priceless to us, especially to my Mum. I'm sure this is the case for many pet owners across the globe.

When we have a diagnosis or other updates, I or another member of my family will post them as often as we can. Maybe once we know what it is we can raise awareness for other pets that suffer from a similar type of thing.

My parents are proud, generous, helpful but reluctant when it comes to recieving help, though we all know everyone needs help sometimes. We wouldnt ask if we werent desperate.

If you can help, even if you only can spare one penny, we would be eternally grateful. Even if you just share this page with one person, you are helping us tremendously.

Thankyou
