Tubléon Conservation Mission

"Go West, young man" is a phrase often credited to the American author Horace Greeley concerning America's expansion westward, related to the then-popular concept of Manifest Destiny.

Manifest Tadhana in the Filipino native language Tagalog is translated to Manifest Destiny. For a mixed Filipino-American, I grew up hearing stories about the Spanish, Japanese and America occupation of the Philippines. Stories of overseas foreign workers (OFWs), political corruption and the resilience of the people even though a majority live in poverty. This is my manifest destiny to trek back to the Philippines and focus on helping push forward the country once called home to my ancestors.

It has been one month since I've landed in Manila, Philippines on a mission to protect the oceans natural resources from the destruction of coral reefs and harvesting of endangered marine life. For me, this is my redemption story; it's my time to give back to the world for all the amazing opportunities it has afforded me. I am the prodigal son of the Philippines and I'm ready to take my place in its history.

I'm now in a developing country being exposed to poverty and being presented the opportunity to help fix it. The end of 2014, I took time off to reflect on which direction I wanted to take my career and what type of legacy I wanted to leave behind. I am following my childhood dream to be a marine biologist and focus my philanthropic effort towards protecting our oceans.

During the my last days at Sapient Nitro China in 2011, I traveled down to the Philippines for the first time in my life and I spent time exploring the local spots. My grandpa told me "you should bring your talent down here..." and I decided to take this giant leap of faith. I fell in love with the opportunity to explore the native land. Fast forward to 2015, I'm once again back in Manila focusing on my non-profit and philanthropy project, Tubléon Conservation Society. Tubléon comes from the Tagalog words; Tubig = Water and Leon = Lion.

My mission is to focus on oceanic conservation within the 200 nautical mile EEZ coastline of the Philippines whilst studying and protecting the natural resources. I am looking at launching a green technology accelerator that will allow innovators and entrepreneurs an island environment to develop green/eco startups. Partnering with the local and national government, we are bringing awareness to the region monitoring Chinese fishing vessels that are harvesting endangered giant clams.

I'm just getting started as the Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal are currently being disputed and with China aggressively showing disregard to endangered natural resources, we will need support to help bring awareness into the region. I'm currently in the process of setting up our 501(c)(3) status but open to any assistance/advice we can get from the community at large would be very much appreciated.

I'm hoping to raise funds so that I could equip myself with the necessary supplies for survival on a remote island where essentials like sleeping quarters, fresh drinking water and electricity are unavailable.  Thank you for your help and I look forward to updating you with news from our mission trip.
