I recently visited the small island community of Togoron, in the last week of March 2017. It was a 2-hour boat ride to the island coming from Pilar, Sorsogon, which was an hour drive from Legazpi City. Upon our arrival I was welcomed by the sight and sounds of children playing in the water by the tide walls.
It was like stepping into a world where time stood still and where the wind, the sun, the trees and the water all felt alive and aware of my existence- a feeling I remember as a child. The streets were small- definitely designed only for walking and transporting small carts of goods.
My father is currently the barangay (village) captain of Togoron. As the community leader, he is very much invested int he safety, prosperity and well-being of the people.
Most people do not know that this island is also occupied by the New People's Army (NPA), which is an armed communist group of militants who have been harassing many villages, towns, cities and provinces in the Philippines, including this islan village we are seeking to help. This small village has suffered a great deal in the past, but with the help of the Philippine Army and a more efficient economic system on their island, they are starting to regain courage, confidence, dignity and autonomy. Within the past year, they also received electricity which can now be accessed in small measures mostly in the evening hours, as well as a flood control canal which they built with the help of Red Cross who donated 30% of the funds needed for the construction. The government also provided the building a small elementary school, which was supplemented by the building of a new administration/ multi-purpose building donated by my father and his brotherhood of FreeMasons.
About 90% of the people is still suffering from poverty. Through fishing and farming, they are able to sustain themselves and to live day by day. However, they do not have the capacity to provide for their children proper opportunities for higher education.
The Togoron Education Outreach is dedicated to bringing higher education to the children of Togoron, because we believe that development of education in the community through proper teaching of knowledge, mentorship and life applications, the people of Togoron will gain greater power and strength not only to bring prosperity and growth into their own lives as a community, but it will also become their greatest protection against all adversaries, including floods, supply shortages, and especially against the rebel communist groups who still lurk the island.
Given the current circumstances on their island, they barely have the opportunity and the capacity to maintain their small educational system with all the supplies, books and resources they need in order to provide the same opportunities for higher education that many of us readily enjoy. As a result, many of their children, after finishing elementary school and sometimes high school, choose to stay in the village, forgoing anymore opportunities to advance through college or other pursuits.
OUR VISION is that one day, these same children we are helping will be able to receive the OPPORTUNITY for higher education, to become SUCCESSFUL in their own fields of choosing, and eventually return to RAISE THE VILLAGE THAT RAISED THEM.
Your donation will be used in these ways:
1. Between July and August of 2017, we will be providing the elementary school, composed of approximately 400 children, with books, notebooks, coloring and writing materials, and other materials of immediate need.
2. We will be donating 5-8 computers to be used on school property. When our team arrives in the village, we will be training the teachers on using the computers so that they will be able to teach the children and begin the process of acquainting the children with the use of computers. We will also be training the community in other areas such as environmental preservation through recycling, vermiculture, and proper disposal of goods.
3. All remaining balance will be kept in the organization to perpetuate the growth and efforts of the Togoron Educational Outreach in helping the children of Togoron receive higher opportunities for higher learning.
