Drought Stricken Cattle Farmers

My name is Paul van Kan. I am a Photographer & Film Maker from Sydney, Australia. 

In recent months I have been travelling to the centre of this vast country in order to document the hardships of the Kidd family, cattle farmers in the far western Queensland community of Windorah.  "Dude" and Helen Kidd, along with their four year old son Charlie, are struggling to keep their long held family property afloat amidst one of Australia's longest droughts on record.





The project, initially conceived as a small photographic reportage series, has grown beyond my expectations as a result of time shared with the Kidds, the people of Windorah and an immersion in their world.  The character, resilience and humour with which the Kidds and the people of Windorah confront the trials of Australia's uncompromising interior is inspiring and should be shared.


I have journeyed twice already to Windorah in order to shoot Dude Kidd and his family.  To complete their story, myself and an audio assistant must return to Windorah once more. I can no longer afford to continue this project through self funding alone.  I am seeking the assistance of external funding in order to record this snapshot of Australian history. This pledge is not for profit but necessary to cover travel and production expenses.
