HeART of Texas Adult Coloring Book

My name is Alexandria Thomas, and I am currently a student in the Arts Leadership Master's Program at Seattle University. As I write, I am currently, in the beginning, stages of developing my thesis project.  I’m proud to introduce the beginnings of “The HeART of Texas - A Coloring Book by Texas Artists”.

After months of doing research on the benefits and success of integrating arts as a medical tool in both hospital settings and everyday life, I was surprised to find that its usage is not more widespread. Unfortunately, my research also revealed that many parents often spend long hours in the hospital sitting and waiting without anything to occupy their minds from the stress.  In an “Ahh Ha” moment, I recognized a void in creative programs for the parents of these children. I knew then without a doubt that something must be done.  I came across the Arts in Medicine program at the Texas Children's Cancer Center. This program provides fun filled educational arts projects to children and their families in hopes of developing coping skills needed to deal with cancer and blood disorders.

I was born and raised in Houston, TX, and the place that currently keeps me is Seattle, WA. Both cities are very dear to me. In tribute to these wonderful cities, I wanted to develop a project that would combine the two communities that shape who I am, as well as, be charitable, art related and impactful, thus the inspiration for “The HeART of Texas - A Coloring Book by Texas Artists.”

“The HeART of Texas - A Coloring Book by Texas Artists” will be a 28-page adult coloring book comprised of 26 pages designed by Texas artists.  The other remaining pages in part will pay tribute to those within the Seattle community that has helped me during the research process. The coloring book’s mission is to minister to the whole person during stressful life situations. It is my belief that this coloring book will be an incredible program that will facilitate positive change for the families challenged by all illnesses. This book has the potential to help support the mental health of the hospital's patients and families for years to come!

I am very excited to see where this book can go, but my financial resources are very limited as a student. I am willing to do all of the labor required to bring this coloring book to life, but I ask that YOU consider helping me fund this project. Although this book will be distributed to parents of patients at the Texas Children's Hospital, this is an independent project. $2,500 will cover the cost to print 150 books, compensate the artist for their time and designs, along with copyrighting the book. The coloring book will also be published locally as another way to support Texas from beginning to end with this project.  The coloring books will be offered to the hospital at no cost.

A $20 donation can pay for the cost of printing five books!

A $50 donation can pay for an artist’s time and design!

No donation is too small, and everyone’s donation helps this project move forward!

Thank you in advance for your support in “The HeART of Texas - A Coloring Book by Texas Artists”.
