On October 13, 2013 my best friend, Samantha, went through a mother's worst nightmare. Her four year old daughter, Katie, was accidentally ran over by her father on a lawn mower. Katie has had 21 surgeries since that day. The first one to save her life and the rest in an effort to save her leg. I'll never forget Sam calling me from the hospital to say she moved her toes and just how happy they were to take their girl home from the hospital some thirty days later with BOTH legs...
These last few years have been an emotional roller coaster for the family. I have seen a young boy be the best big brother any girl could have. I have seen parents reassure their children that all will be okay. I have witnessed all of them grow together in a life that they were not prepared for but is in no way less sweet. I have seen them sad but I have seen them incredibly happy. I have seen them scared but I have seen incomprehensible courage. Through it all, I have seen Katie guide them with an unshakeable bravery. Her positive attitude and  joyful spirit is second to none. With relentless determination, she has shown everyone who knows her how to persevere through the hard times.
On July 13, 2015 a doctor at Boston Children's hospital confirmed what Sam's recent suspicions had been. Katie's leg was holding her back. The leg that they  fought so hard to save. The leg that we all prayed for her to be able to keep. That leg would simply never be able to function for her like a prosthetic would.
So Sam and Russ continued to do what they have always done, which is do the next right thing for their daughter. After thoughtful consideration, and second and third opinions, they have decided to amputate her leg. I cry as I type this because I know Katie. I know her family. We have seen her be part of a soccer team. We've seen her jump and play. We've seen her trudge on with blisters and sores from her brace. But now...
We will see her RUN.
We will see her ride her bike down their street once again.
We will see her continue to be a light the world so desperately needs.
Though she be but little, she is FIERCE.
I am asking for your help.
The last thing I want is for my friends to worry about the financial aspect of this transition. Life is about connection. It's about showing up when we can for others. Ours hearts are nourished when we can make a difference. And, together, I believe we can.
Please, please donate. Share with everyone you know. Spread the word regarding mower safety.
We will be forever grateful.
