Oklahoma nurses travel to Nepal to provide earthquake relief…

Gyanendra Bhattarai, a native of Nepal and registered nurse in the ICU at Integris Baptist Medical Center, and Taylor White, a registered nurse in the ICU at Norman Regional Hospital, partnered with Nepalese Society of Texas to travel to Nepal April 30th through May 9th to help provide emergency medical relief and general aid to the survivors in some of the hardest hit areas of Nepal.

Our mission was to reach the rural areas within the affected districts that have not yet received the much needed aid due their distance from the airport and lack of developed roads. These villages have been devastated and thousands of lives have been lost, yet they continue to suffer with little or no assistance. Our team of 14 medical, administrative, and military volunteers worked hard coordinating with physicians and other medical professionals on the ground, most of them residents of Nepal, who are dedicated, trustworthy, and committed to the cause of meeting the needs of these survivors in the most practical and efficient ways.

While serving in areas most affected by the quake such as Bhaktapur, Dhading, Nuwakot, Gorkha, Pokhara, Dhunche, and more, we were able to treat roughly 500 patients, provide thousands of pounds of food, hand out over 2,500 tents & blankets, and much more. Although we were able to help, for Gyanendra & I, our stay was entirely too short. We wish we could have stayed longer to continue our efforts on the ground, but we look forward to hosting fundraisers & events to raise more money to be used for the recovery & rebuilding of this great nation. We have some amazing friends, including our incredible physiotherapist Bishnu, who live in Nepal and work directly with those affected & are dedicated to being our eyes, ears, hands, & feet while we are away. We will be continuing to work closely with him & other NST affiliates to determine the best course of action & the most responsible way to allocate funds.

We know there are remote areas that have been struck hard, yet still have not been reached. Lack of food & clean drinking water remain issues in many areas. With the rainy season fast approaching, shelter & sanitation will become even more of an issue. As time passes & people move on with their day to day lives, it will be easy to ignore the suffering continuing to occur on the other side of the world. We must not forget about these innocent victims. We are currently in the emergent & survival stages. Recovery of lost victims, providing emergency medical care to survivors, and basic survival needs, such as food & water, are the main foci.

In the coming months & even years, the focus will shift to the rebuilding process. The need for adequate shelter, plumbing, schools, and more is tremendous. We have seen the destruction first hand & are determined to make a lasting difference in the lives of those who have touched our souls. We will remain in coordination with our NST, in-country, & other contacts in order to establish the best plan of action that will help the most families possible. Depending on the amount of donations received, some ideas we've discussed in addition to meeting basic needs include affordable housing options, rebuilding schools, clean water sources, and restroom installation.

Nepal needs you! In order to follow through with these plans and really make a lasting impact on the lives of these amazing people, we rely on funds raised from generous donors such as yourself. While we in America are blessed with the opportunity to give and not think twice because we are able to make more money tomorrow, many around the world are not as fortunate. The money you spend on a morning coffee could be the money used to feed an entire family. The money saved by switching off unused electronics could provide medical care to a suffering child. Please consider making a donation today. Thank you so much for your support!

All the funds obtained through this effort will go 100% toward buying food, shelter, and medical supplies within Nepal, and therefore eliminating logistic overheads while supporting local economy. Since volunteers are self-funded, it is important to emphasize that none of the money raised here will go toward support of the volunteers. Every penny will be directly used to meet the needs of the earthquake survivors.  The best and most practical means to help is through monetary donation.

The people of Nepal NEED YOUR HELP!!! Please share this page and help spread the word.
