Ageing Without Children
Donation protected
My name is Kirsty Woodard. I wanted to have children but am unable to and describe myself as childless.
There are already 1 million people over 65 without adult children in the Uk and by 2030, this will double to 2 million. I have worked with older people for over 20 years and seen first hand how much care and support is given to older people by their families. I have also seen how the State assumes everyone has a family and that families will care even though in some cases they are not able to, or willing to, provide support. Consequently, people who are getting old without any family are overlooked when Governemnt talks and thinksd about ageing. I began to wonder what would happen to me and thousands like me when I beocme old and frail and perhaps need support.
In 2014 along with 3 other people - Jody Day, Dr Robin Hadley and Mervyn Eastman - I set up AWOC. Since then we have set up local groups, campaigned on the issue, produced a report called "Our Voices" detailing the expereinces of people ageing without children and set up a facebook support group.
We applied to the Big Lottery Fund to expand our work but sadly have been unsuccessful and are now trying to ensure the organisation's survival.
