On Saturday April 25th, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake left a large part of Nepal in ruins - thousands have died, cultural and religious sites destroyed, and many are homeless in Kathmandu. And as information becomes available from villages, the devastation appears to be worse. My sister Nisha and I, both university students at VCU and Virginia Tech, respectively, have strong ties to the country as our entire family is from there. We have been fortunate enough to visit regularly and enjoy the rich culture of our parents’ homeland. We are devastated to hear that so many of the temples and historic sites that we were always fond of visiting have been completely demolished. What saddens us the most is knowing that thousands of lives have been lost and many others are left homeless, starving, and in need of urgent care. We are raising funds for Hope for Nepal Foundation, an organization run by our aunt, Praggyashree Raje Gaekwad.
Hope for Nepal Foundation is registered in Kathmandu, Nepal and was set up on August 23rd 2010. It was initiated by Princess Asha Raje and Praggyashree Raje Gaekwad, along with them the main trustees are Gen Pyar Jung Thapa (former coas), Kamala Thapa (chairperson MSI Nepal) and Mr Morten Rana. It has been committed towards the welfare of Nepal for the past 5 years. Now at the wake of this horrific disaster that has fallen upon our country, HFNF hopes to assist in relieving the burden by reaching out to people in the villages.
Hope for Nepal Foundation’s primary rescue operation is being set up in the Sankhu Village area which has been completely destroyed. They are providing shelter, tents, sleeping bags, blankets, tarpaulins, torch lights, water bottles, instant food, and first aid kits. They have buses to search for and retrieve displaced people and a stand by vehicle serving to function as an ambulance to take serious cases to nearby hospitals. They will also have an ongoing kitchen to provide food.
We will be donating all funds raised directly to Hope for Nepal Foundation. Every donation, big or small, will go a long way in helping the Nepali people!
